VPN : First trial version of Wireguard for Windows available

The modern and free VPN technology Wireguard was developed on Linux and now runs for the first time officially on Windows. This is what the initiator of the project, Jason Donenfeld, announces via the mailing list. However, the developer endeavors to keep the expectations of the now available version as small as possible and therefore calls the software “pre-alpha”.

Done field use that term, “because the software is not finished and there are many goals which we have not yet reached, but of which many are safety related. We have not even begun to optimize the performance”. After all, the software is now functional.

However, Wireguard for Windows already has a similar UI to MacOS, a multiprocessing architecture with process isolation, a kind of kill switch to block network traffic that does not pass through the Wireguard tunnel, and signed drivers for Windows Server 2016 and 2019. The MSI installers and Unistaller work as desired.

Nevertheless, there is still a lot of work to do on the Windows port. The team has provided a publicly available to-do list. There are still many errors listed and the part of the just a few weeks ago introduced Wintun driver is particularly critical. Likewise, the security of the architecture is currently still in development. To further emphasize the latter, the Wireguard team also provides a summary of the attack surface of its Windows port. If you still want to test the first version of the Windows port of Wireguard, you can download it from the project website.
