Glaucoma is basically an eye disease that can cause damage to the optic nerve, the one that is responsible for supplying visual information to the brain from the eyes.

The main cause of glaucoma is abnormal high pressure inside the eye. The increased pressure leads to eroding of the optic nerve tissue and this ultimately leads to the loss of vision or blindness.

Glaucoma is essentially related to the increased level of intraocular pressure (IOP) and an accurate, non-invasive way of monitoring an individual’s IOP helps to increase the chances of maintaining vision.

Smartphones in this regard have been a boon as they detect increased IOP levels and facilitate early diagnosis and treatment. A major concern for glaucoma is the development of a thin central corneal thickness (CCT) which could be either spontaneously or by a common procedure as laser eye surgery. This CCT is responsible for the lowering of IOP reading using flat tension measurements.

It has been observed that IOP is an important measurement of wholesome imaginative and prescient, outlined as stress created by continued renewal of eye fluids. Ocular hypertension can imbalance in the drainage of aqueous fluid in the older people thus giving rise to Glaucoma.

Soundwaves used as a cell measurement technique would detect growing values of IOP, prompting early prognosis and therapy. Statistics also reveal that working on a smartphone in low-light conditions can induce elevated IOP in patients with normal-tension glaucoma.

It is generally easy to assess the risk factors for other eye diseases. While in the case of diabetic retinopathy, diabetics are at particular risk. In fact, they are constantly monitoring small bulges in the blood vessels of the eye.

A team of scientists and eminent doctors from the University of Birmingham have published their study in Wiley Online Library, and according to the results of the study, when one is viewing smartphones, sustained efforts, accommodation, and ocular surface changes seem to develop like the dry eye which helps in the diagnosis of glaucoma.

The current “gold standard” method of measuring IOP is flat-tension measurement, where paralyzed drops followed by non-toxic dyes are applied to the patient’s eye. There are measurement errors and problems with this method.

IOP is an important measure of healthy vision and is defined as the pressure created by the continuous renewal of ocular fluid. Sound waves, used as a mobile measurement method, detect increased IOP levels and facilitate early diagnosis and treatment.

Moreover, it has been discovered that there is a relationship between the internal pressure of an object and its acoustic reflection coefficient. It is possible that with the use of smartphones, it is easier to measure IOP accurately from the comfort of the user’s home.

Glaucoma is an optic nerve disease that affects 79.6 million people worldwide and, if left untreated, causes irreversible damage.
