Forgot your iPhone backup password? Here's what to do
Nowadays the smartphone has become part of our lives in such a profound way that it has become a sort of “virtual casket” of our most important data. Without you even having decided, for example, on your phone all the passwords of the sites you visit from mobile are stored, the history of the websites, the settings of all the Wi-Fi networks you use and, if you have an iPhone and an iWatch, even your health data.

To these data are added those that you decide to store on your smartphone, such as your favorite music, the archive of your personal or work emails and so on. Precisely because of the large amount of important data that your iPhone contains, it is a good idea to protect them through an encrypted backup armored by a good and strong password.

In this way, even if you steal or lose your iPhone, no one will be able to access your important data without knowing your password and, even if a possible thief managed to force the password protection system, you would find a large amount of encrypted and, therefore, illegible data.

But what if you lose or don’t remember the iPhone backup password? The eventuality is not the most pleasant, because in this case you will have no way to recover the password but only to reset it to set a completely new one. The procedure is not difficult, but passes through the cancellation of many other settings.

To reset the backup password of your device with iOS 11 or higher, just go to Settings> General> Restore. At this point, tap ” Restore ” and enter your iOS password and follow all the steps to restore the settings. Settings like screen brightness, wallpaper or your custom Home screen will be lost. But all encrypted backup passwords will be removed and, in this way, you will be able to set them again by connecting the device to iTunes and creating a new backup with a new password.

How to reset the backup password on iPhone with iOS 10 or earlier

If you have an Apple device with a previous operating system, ie iOS 10 or lower, you cannot reset the encrypted backup password. But you could still solve the problem by circumventing it. If you have a Mac, your iPhone password could be saved in the Keychain. Otherwise, Apple suggests the following steps:

1) If another user has configured your device, ask to provide you with the password used

2) Use an iCloud backup instead of iTunes. If you don’t have an iCloud backup, you can create one
