Tesla failed to reach the goal set by its CEO Elon Musk, to deliver 500,000 vehicles in 2020. While breaking its own record, the car-maker shipped ‘only’ 499,550 vehicles last year.

According to a report published by the company, a total of 509,737 cars were manufactured at its plants throughout 2020, of which 499,550 were delivered to buyers, or 99.91% of what was planned.

However, Tesla highlighted that the final count could vary by as much as 0.5%. That makes it possible for it to eclipse the 500,000 car targets when final figures will be released at the end of January.

Either way, Tesla’s sales are almost three times higher than the green vehicles from Volkswagen, the second-largest seller of such cars in 2020. According to Inside EVs, the German automaker sold a total of 166,745 electric cars last year.

Tesla’s sales are even more remarkable considering the impact the COVID-19 pandemic had on its operations in the first half of the year. The company was forced to close its new factory in China, as well as its vehicle plant in California, for several weeks due to measures imposed by the authorities to prevent the spread of the virus.

Through his Twitter account, Musk celebrated the annual figures of his company.

“So proud of the Tesla team for achieving this major milestone! At the start of Tesla, I thought we had (optimistically) a 10% chance of surviving at all,” the businessman tweeted.
