Gym workout could be harmful to one of your body part

Loud music is a part of the business in a gym or training studio, and it can help us move, but it can also be extremely dangerous over time. Here’s everything you need to know.

In gyms, there is a lot of noise from various electronic devices blasting music, from people working out, from background music or music individuals listen to through headphones to mask out exterior sounds.

Many group activities, including spinning, aerobics, and Zumba, use loud music with an average decibel level of 93. The issue is that prolonged exposure to such volume levels can damage hearing.

According to a 2019 study conducted at Hadassah College in Israel, the average noise level in gyms is 95 decibels, and an online survey indicated that 41 percent of individuals working out were aware that the volume of music was too loud, but just 27 percent said they wanted to lower it.

A different study looked at people’s hearing thresholds (at 1000-6000 hertz) before they started Zumba.

The average noise level in the class was 91 dB, and researchers discovered that 13 of the 16 subjects had a deviation (hearing loss) of 10 decibels or more in one or both ears in one of the frequencies studied.

In addition, half of the participants experienced ringing in their ears and/or numbness in their ears after the class.

Despite this, just one responder stated she would be prepared to exercise with the music turned down.

Various studies have found that when compared to exposure to the same quantity of noise at rest, there is a greater risk of hearing loss during activity.

The possibilities include, among other things, an increase in metabolic activity as well as changes in blood flow and body temperature. Temporary Threshold Shift (TTS) is a term used to indicate a negative alteration in hearing thresholds produced by loud noise exposure.

When someone has TTS, they usually notice that speech and any surrounding sounds are weaker. Low-volume sounds might be difficult to hear, and speech can become muffled as a result.

There will also be a feeling of opacity and pressure in the ears, as well as tinnitus, or a wheezing sound in the ears. These symptoms normally go away within 24 hours, but they can last for several days.

Hearing thresholds eventually recover to their natural state. Recurrent TTS episodes, on the other hand, can turn a transient hearing loss into a chronic condition.

The maximum allowable loudness of music in gyms in the United States is 85 dB, and the instructor’s voice should not exceed 95 decibels. The instructor should talk at least 10 decibels above the loudness of the music, according to rules, so that the persons doing out can hear.

Here are a few options if the music in your workout class is too loud.

  • Use earplugs;
  • Stand further away from the speakers, if possible;
  • Ask the instructors to turn down the volume. 

Soundproof headphones are advised for individuals who prefer to listen to their own music in the gym instead of the amplifier approach to solve the volume of ambient noises.

“People go to the gym with the intention of maintaining their physical and mental health, but most are unaware that while they’re improving their fitness, their hearing may be impaired,” says Mira Berlin, a communication clinician.  

Hearing loss has various consequences for our quality of life, as well as our capacity to communicate with others and even our cognitive capacities as we age, she notes.
