Often, in the early stages, people do not notice that they have a fever and unknowingly spread the virus. A tiny wearable device promises to solve this problem.

Finnish startup Oura has finished testing a smart ring that aims to identify the main symptoms of influenza and COVID-19.

The Oura ring records a person’s temperature, heart rate, respiration, and activity level.

“The first results of the ring testing showed that fever – the main symptom of infection – starts differently for everyone, so quite often in the early stages of the disease, a person does not even realize that it is contagious to others,” the article says.

By studying temperature changes and comparing it to heart rate, changes in heart rate and respiration, scientists have determined that some people have a faster heart rate when they become infected, while others have a fever.

“Continuous monitoring of indicators, on the contrary, monitors the health status of a particular person and, in the case of specific changes, will alert the user about any signs of discomfort. If AI continuously analyzes them all, it will be much easier to diagnose fever at an early stage,” the authors believe.

So far, the authors have published the results of 50 patients who shared their medical data with the developers after the discovery of COVID-19. A total of 65,000 volunteers will take part in their study. This amount of data will allow developing an algorithm that will predict the appearance of the main symptoms of influenza and COVID-19 – fever, cough and fatigue, scientists are sure.
