For his part, Taylor Swift did everything at the last moment: from writing and recording the songs, to making the announcement of this new album both to her label and to her followers.
11 months ago Swift released “Lover”, her seventh album and a project that took more than six months to create. But on Thursday, July 23, through her Instagram account, the singer announced that at midnight “Folklore” her eighth LP would be available on all platforms.
“Most of the things I had planned this summer did not end up happening, but there is something I had not planned for to happen. And that’s my eighth studio album, ‘folklore’. Surprise. Tonight at midnight I will release all my new album of songs in which I have poured all my whims, dreams, fears and reflections,” said the 30-year-old singer.
The singer said that in addition to achieving in difficult time making music, she did it with admiring artists such as multi-instrumentalist of The National, Aaron Dessner and founder of Bon Iver, Justin Vernon.
“I wrote and recorded this music in isolation, but I was able to collaborate with some of my musical heroes; @aarondessner (who has co-written or produced 11 of the 16 songs), @boniver (who co-wrote and was kind enough to sing one with me), William Bowery (who co-wrote two with me), and @jackantonoff (who is basically a family musical right now) ”, she added.
In addition, the singer reflected on the uncertainty of life, and why the moment in which we are living prompted her to publish the 16 songs.
“Before this year, I probably would have thought too much about when to release this music at the ‘perfect’ time, but the times we live in keep reminding me that nothing is guaranteed. My instinct tells me that if you do something you love, you should bring it out into the world. That is the side of uncertainty that I can deal with,” she explained.
For now, Swift’s work was well-received by both fans and critics. “Her emotional acuity was never so assured,” The Guardian said in a five-star review. “‘Folklore’ feels fresh, forward-looking and, above all, honest,” said NME.
