A common symptom of B12 deficiency, which can be seen around the eyes

Published on

Vitamin B12 deficiency is common among vegetarians, vegans, and individuals over 75, but don’t panic; it’s easy to spot if you know what to look for.

This vitamin, commonly known as vitamin B12, plays an important role in the functioning of the metabolism and the generation of red blood cells.

Plants don’t require the nutrient hence vegetarians and vegans may struggle to get enough. This means that non-meat eaters’ diets are less likely to include it.

The elderly, aged 75 and up, are another group known to suffer from a shortage of it, with one in ten of this group believed to have a shortfall due to the body’s inability to absorb it adequately.

What are the symptoms of B12 deficiency?

An unpleasant twitch around the eyes can be an indication of a deficiency, and while it’s not the only sign to look for, it’s a noticeable shift that can be detected quickly.

According to experts from Medical Daily, “Eye twitching and eyelid spasms are also signs that could help pinpoint vitamin B12 deficiency.”

Eye blepharospasm is a condition that can be treated with B12 injections and is thought to be reversible.

The Journal of Neurology India says: “Blepharospasm can be a rare manifestation of vitamin B12 deficiency, which is reversible with therapy.

“Vitamin B12 levels and homocysteine levels should be tested in patients with blepharospasm in whom there is no obvious cause for blepharospasm.”

However, it is not the most common sign of a shortage, and there are other indicators to be aware of as well.

It’s also vital to pay attention to the body’s extremities, which can be a common flashpoint for the ailment, which affects the neurological system, due to their sensitivity to touch.

Low levels might cause pins and needles, as well as burning sensations. This is due to the fact that the sheath that surrounds your nerves could become damaged, resulting in a condition known as peripheral neuropathy.

Fatigue, pale complexion, pins and needles, and a sore red tongue are further signs to watch for.

What are the most common signs and symptoms of Vitamin B12 deficiency?

The following are some of the most prevalent symptoms of a vitamin B12 shortage, according to the health organization:

  • extreme tiredness
  • a lack of energy
  • pins and needles (paraesthesia)
  • a sore and red tongue
  • mouth ulcers
  • muscle weakness
  • disturbed vision
  • psychological problems, which may include depression and confusion
  • problems with memory, understanding and judgement

What to do if You Have a B12 Deficiency

As B12 is widely available in animal-based meals, meat eaters are less prone to develop a deficiency. It can be found in fish, meat, eggs, and dairy products.

Supplementation may be the best option if you are suffering from a nutritional shortage.

If you can’t absorb the vitamin, your doctor can prescribe a B12 infection, which is a six-week supplement.

The NIH recommends 5.94 mcg for men aged 20 and older and 3.78 mcg for women of B12 per day for adults.
