A Popular Vitamin Won’t Mind To Give You Cancer – Study Finds

Dietary supplements have grown in popularity in recent years, owing to the outbreak of the pandemic, which has stressed the significance of bolstering the body’s natural defense system more than ever.

Some people believe that because vitamins aren’t prescription drugs, they’re all safe to take and won’t harm them. This isn’t always the case, especially if you don’t run out of a vitamin you take in pill form.

Some dietary supplements might induce unpleasant side effects such as indigestion, nausea, and rashes. Experts warn that in more extreme circumstances, it may even raise the risk of developing diseases such as cancer.

According to a study published in March 2022, a common supplement that many individuals take on a regular basis may raise their risk of lung cancer. The study looked at data on over 63,000 persons in Singapore collected over a 25-year period starting in 1993. The findings imply a relationship between greater vitamin B12 consumption and a “significantly” increased chance of getting lung cancer.

“This association was more pronounced in men compared to women and was more common in those suffering from adenocarcinoma, a cancer that affects the lung glands and is considered the most common of lung cancers,” the researchers wrote. It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first study to find a link between the two. It was noted after other academic articles reached similar results in the past.

This vitamin isn’t for most people.

Vitamin B12 has long been viewed as a cancer-fighting supplement, but new research has shown that this may not be the case. Researchers from Ohio University issued a warning about the potential risks associated with taking vitamins B12 and B6 together in a study that was published in 2017. Lung cancer risk has increased considerably more among active smokers, especially in men.

People who ingested more than 20 mg of vitamin B6 per day, as well as 55 mcg of vitamin B12 per day, had a higher risk of cancer, according to this study. Still, we want to stress that this is a much higher amount than what most people get from food and also more than what most multivitamin supplements give you.

For persons of all ages, experts recommend eating 1.3-1.5 mg of vitamin B6 and 2.4 mcg of vitamin B12. According to the data, roughly 60% of people currently get enough B6 from their daily dietary intake. Their B12 levels are low, but that’s not a concern because 49.9% of them get enough from food and don’t need supplements.

In general, the best method to make sure you’re not taking supplements that are harmful to your body is to undergo regular blood tests and only take supplements that your doctor prescribes.

And, in the case of the vitamins in issue, it’s possible that you’re getting enough of them from food already. Many foods contain vitamin B6, including chicken, fish, almonds, soybeans, wheat germ, oats, bananas, and milk. Meat, fish, milk, eggs, and some cereals all contain B12. There could be a deficiency among persons who forgo meat and milk, but as previously stated, check each case separately.

A lack of vitamin B12 can also cause pernicious anemia, which needs to be treated more specifically with pills or injections. Even older persons who have a deficiency in this vitamin or who have a decrease in stomach acidity can benefit from supplements if they are taken under medical care, especially if they are taking medications or having unexplained side effects.
