Be careful with oatmeal – it may not always be healthy

Oatmeal has long been a popular morning cereal. It’s created with oat groats, which are oat kernels without the husks.

Steel-cut (or chopped), rolled, or “instant” oat goats are commonly used. The more processed the oats are, like in instant oats, the faster they are absorbed and the faster blood sugar levels can potentially rise.

You can get a lot of health benefits from oatmeal. It can be great food for people with diabetes if they keep a close eye on their portions. Cooked oatmeal has about 30 grams of carbs per cup, making it a good supper option for diabetics.

Although oats are high in protein and fiber, products including them may have a variety of additives, particularly sweets.

Sugary instant oatmeal

The majority of popular instant oatmeal brands include 10-12 grams of sugar per serving of under 200 calories. This means you’ll consume nearly a quarter of the total amount of sugar recommended by experts in a serving size that’s less than 10 times the daily calorie requirement.

It can cause bloating

The fiber in oats might produce bloating and gas due to increased sensitivity of the stomach walls.

Oatmeal goes bad more quickly than you think.

Oatmeal has a 24-month shelf life, regardless of how finely ground it is. If the temperature is higher than +25 ° C, the storage period is limited to 12 months.

Oatmeal with various additives has a shelf life of 6 to 12 months. Oatmeal should be kept dry and aired in a cardboard box, ideally in the dark. 

Oats are often mixed with gluten

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley, as well as other grains. This chemical is responsible for the flexibility of bread and pasta.

Most people can consume gluten without any side effects, but some protein causes serious health problems. It inhibits digestive enzymes in the intestines.

Pure oats are gluten-free and safe for most people with intolerances. However, oats are often contaminated with gluten because they are processed in the same plants as gluten-containing grains such as wheat, rye and barley.

Oatmeal can be dangerous for diabetics and more

A large portion of oatmeal, even low in sugar, can trigger a jump in blood sugar. And because oatmeal can cause slow gastric emptying, it can affect the timing and absorption of other nutrients, which will be a problem for diabetics.

Excess oatmeal (more than a serving per day) can also cause calcium deficiency. Oatmeal has a special substance – phytic acid, which inhibits the absorption of calcium in the intestine.
