Can Cannabis Help Heart Patients? Here’s Some New Evidence From An Expert

Is CBD A Miraculous Drug? The popularity of cannabidiol and other medical cannabis products has skyrocketed over the past decade.

There is strong evidence that CBD is effective for the following conditions: pain, cachexia, nausea and vomiting, stiffness associated with multiple sclerosis, and, most recently, epilepsy.

Its pharmacological profile indicates that it is safe and well-tolerated in humans, despite having well-documented side effects. However, it is unclear how these treatments would react with others commonly prescribed by cardiologists, such as those used to treat blood clots and platelet problems.

In this new review, the researchers want to provide preclinical evidence, which will be the basis for setting up well-designed clinical trials in people to prove the effect of CBD on coronary syndromes with strong scientific evidence.

CBD is a non-psychoactive compound obtained from the Cannabis species. Additionally, it has chemopreventive, antineoplastic, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties. According to the studies, marijuana is the most commonly used substance when compared to other drugs such as cocaine, heroin, and so on. As these products become more popular, more people with heart disease may think about using them.

“Medical marijuana and CBD,” according to  Zúñiga Ayala, “may be of interest as it is advertised and anecdotally distributed as a treatment for many conditions with possible and inconclusive evidence like glaucoma, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, anxiety and depression, inflammatory bowel disease and many other conditions that lack clinical data.”

Due to the anti-inflammatory effects of CBD, the purpose of the study was to evaluate its possible function in lowering myocardial ischemia, a condition in which restricted blood supply to the heart can cause chest pain, heart failure, and heart attack as the heart works harder to pump blood and oxygen.

The researchers conducted a systematic search of the PubMed database up to April 2022 using predetermined search terms and the “Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis” criteria. The study included nine preclinical studies, but no high-quality randomized control trials (RCTs) for CBD use in acute or chronic coronary syndromes were discovered.

A study of nine preclinical research revealed that CBD produced repeatable cardiovascular effects in in-vivo trials. The findings’ mechanisms included a decrease in oxidative stress and inflammation.

In experimental models of myocardial infarction, ischemia and reperfusion lesions, arrhythmias, and diseases similar to metabolic syndrome, CBD also demonstrated promising benefits, according to Ziga Ayala.

The researchers say that the evidence from preclinical studies on CBD and its use in ischemic heart disease is strong enough to suggest well-designed clinical trials in people with coronary syndromes.

“CBD is not a miraculous drug,” says the author, adding, “If taking any other medications, try to seek a specialist on medical cannabis to advise you if you are a candidate to take CBD.

“Always ask for interactions with your previously prescribed medications and do not suspend any drug prescribed by your physician.”

More than a quarter of the CBD products tested in a recent study of 84 online-purchased CBD products contained less CBD than claimed. THC was also discovered in 18 items. Products containing THC could potentially affect heart disease sufferers..”

“If buying CBD,” as recommended by Zúñiga Ayala, “always look for well-established dispensaries. Clinicians should be aware of the unreliability, purity and dosage of CBD in products.”
