It is best to put a cloth mask over a surgical and high protection one, and as an alternative, they suggest the use of single high protection mask, type N-95 to avoid infection from new covid variants, says the CDC.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the United States (CDC) recommended this Wednesday to wear two masks and adjust them as much as possible to the respiratory tract to avoid getting the new variants of covid-19, more infectious than the previous ones.

The new CDC guidelines detail that it is best to wear a cloth mask over a surgical and high-protection one, and as an alternative they suggest a single high-protection mask, type N-95, with a reinforcement so that it is well fixed, with knots in the elastics so that there are no side gaps.

Both methods have been shown to be effective in reducing the entry of potentially infectious aerosols by 95% in laboratory tests, according to the CDC.

The agency has taken a turn when it comes to dealing with the pandemic with the arrival to the Presidency of Joe Biden, who just took control of the federal government less than a month ago ordered for the first time the mandatory use of masks in the public transportation, something that to date was applicable on companies and airlines.

Former President Donald Trump’s administration was reluctant in the first months of the pandemic to ask for or even recommend the use of the mask as the most effective and least restrictive method in reducing the spread of the disease and exposure to the virus.

The CDC’s recommendations came when a new, more contagious SARS-CoV-2 variants, such as the British variant, are spreading very rapidly to become predominant in the United States.

With the deaths of about half a million people and more than 27 million infections, the United States has seen a reduction in new cases after the highs reached after the Christmas holidays.

The US authorities consider it more urgent than ever to accelerate the vaccination campaign against covid-19 to stop the spread of more contagious or potentially more virulent variants as soon as possible.

“Everyone should wear a mask when they are in public or at home when they are with other people who do not live at home. This is especially true when it comes to concerns about the new variants,” CDC Director Rochelle Walensky said at a press conference, in which she acknowledged the tiredness of the population, but assured that recommendations are based on scientific data.
