CDC warns vaccinated can spread coronavirus, recommends face masks indoors

Mandatory mask regimen for vaccinated individuals is returning to the United States. The corresponding limitation applies to areas with a high level of transmission.

As COVID-19 infections continue to increase and vaccination rates decrease, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advised on Tuesday that fully vaccinated individuals wear masks in areas with high transmission.

Dr Rochelle Walensky, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said new data indicates the delta variation, which accounts for more than 80% of new infections in the United States, acts “uniquely differently” from its predecessors and may render vaccinated individuals contagious.

“Information on the delta variant from several states and other countries indicates that in rare occasions some vaccinated people infected with the delta variant after vaccination may be contagious and spread the virus to others,” Walensky stated in announcing the new guidance, a reversal of what the CDC recommended in May.

“This new science is worrisome and unfortunately warrants an update to our recommendation.”

Walensky highlighted the significance of vaccination, noting that so-called breakthrough infections among immunised individuals are uncommon and usually do not result in severe disease.

She also added that the new guidelines would be implemented in schools for the next fall semester, and that students should return to full-time in-person study.

“CDC recommends that everyone in K-12 schools wear a mask indoors, including teachers, staff, students and visitors, regardless of vaccination status,” Walensky said.

In the United States, the delta variant has ravaged unvaccinated populations, accounting for almost all recent hospitalizations and fatalities. Vaccines protect vaccinated people against serious illness and death, according to public health experts, although breakthrough instances are conceivable.
