The most common crimes during Christmas and Festival seasons

These dates should be a reason for happiness and love, but the truth is that they are also ideal moments for all kinds of altercations to happen

Christmas is (or should be) a period of happiness where colony ads, gifts, carols and family gatherings around a succulent meal (or dinner) prevail. However, and although you find it hard to believe, year after year the most magical and wonderful time of the year also hides a dark side: an increase in crimes. And, the causes of crimes do not rest, even on these dates.

Leaving aside the popular truce that happened on Christmas night of 1914, in the First World War, during these holidays, historically, there have been murders as terrible as the one that gave rise to the famous Stagolee song, versioned by artists of the size of The Clash, The Black Keys or Nick Cave. You may have in mind, maybe thanks to some movie, the killers who kill dressed as Santa Claus, which is not just an urban legend. The magazine ‘Best Life’ has decided to encompass some of the most common crimes during these holidays, so that you are not caught off guard.

Arson

It is not because you have left the turkey (or chicken) in the oven for too long or because you forgot to disconnect the Christmas tree.

According to a 2005 report of ‘FEMA’, the fires caused are the most common during the winter, and not only that, in the United States the National Fire Protection Association conducted a study from 2013 to 2017 that concluded that the 21 % of Christmas tree fires were set intentionally! Perhaps it is better to put only the Bethlehem.

Theft

We are not talking about putting on New Year’s Eve dress and pretending to return it the next day as if you had never used it, although that is not good either. Apparently, New Year’s Day is one of the most common to steal, and it makes some sense, considering that these dates are ideal for the crowds of people in shopping centres, looking for perfect gifts (not free, eh ).

Domestic violence

Will it be Christmas dinner? The fact that you have to eat next to your brother-in-law who you can’t stand and end up talking about politics?

These happy holidays, which would have to make the best of us, it seems that they do not. Christmas dinner always attracts thousands of fights that end up, sometimes, terribly wrong.

Behaviour

Alcohol is what it has, and at Christmas, we drink it in large quantities. According to a report published in the 2003 Journal of Criminal Justice, public disturbances are the order of the day on these long-awaited dates, probably due to the alcohol mentioned above, which sometimes does not combine well with street furniture.

Identity Theft

There are more people shopping online than ever on this holiday, so it is no surprise that there is a higher incidence of identity theft. According to a 2018 report by the bank and electronic payment company ACI Worldwide, fraud attempts increase by approximately 14% as of ‘Cyber Monday’. It may be worth it to approach the mall.

Be careful with the car

If you drink, don’t drive. Awareness campaigns sometimes do not seem to help on these dates, especially at Christmas and New Year’s Eve. The 2018 Christmas traffic campaign concluded with 50 deaths in 47 traffic accidents and not only that, the New Year’s Eve balance brought with it twenty brawls and attacks every hour.
