Do you pee in the shower? It can be dangerous to your health - warns expert

Many people pee in the shower to save time or water. Although it seems like an innocent habit, it can actually do more harm than good to our bodies, warns a doctor.

Alicia Jeffrey-Thomas, who specializes in pelvic floor health, explains that doing it in the shower or while the hot water is running turns you into a kind of Pavlov’s dog, controlled by conditioned reflexes.

In other words, your bladder begins to associate certain signals with the need to urinate even when you are not in the bathroom.

“You create an association in the brain between the sound of running water and the need to pee,” she explains.

Jeffrey-Thomas adds that combined with pelvic floor dysfunction, this could lead to urinary incontinence when washing hands or dishes.

The expert recommends stopping urinating in the shower if the sound of running water makes you want to go to the bathroom.

And if you are a woman, there is also another problem, and that is that “we are not designed to urinate standing up,” says the expert, who emphasizes that this does not allow you to relax your pelvic floor 100% and, consequently, empty your bladder well.
