Adopting a diet that may last a lifetime and favorably enhance longevity may be simpler and tastier than you think. The paleo diet is a simple way to eat that was modeled after the way our ancient ancestors ate.
Paleolithic or Paleo for short; often known as the caveman or stone age diet; has recently gained popularity due to its potential health benefits.
A paleo diet doesn’t let you eat foods that became common around 10,000 years ago when farming began.
Dairy foods, legumes, and grains are some of these foods.
Our hunter-gatherer predecessors likely ate foods similar to those in this diet thousands of years ago.
Researchers think that although it is impossible to know exactly what ancient humans consumed in various regions of the world, their diets likely included complete foods.
Included in a paleo diet are fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, lean meats, seafood, and oils.
Paleo diet to lose weight
In one study, the paleo diet was compared to the Mediterranean diet. The researchers looked at glucose tolerance, insulin levels, weight, and the size around the waist.
Scientists discovered that participants on the paleo diet dropped almost five kg over the course of 12 weeks.
In comparison, over the same 12-week period, people following a Mediterranean diet dropped little under four kg.
Paleo diet for Diabetes
Researchers in the same study also looked at how much the paleo diet would impact glucose tolerance, a sign of insulin resistance and diabetes.
When compared to the Mediterranean diet, the paleo diet came out on top because it led to greater improvements in glucose tolerance.
According to this study’s findings, a person can lose weight and improve their glucose tolerance by following a paleo diet.
Paleo diet for bowel cancer
Researchers at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, looked at the eating habits of 2,301 men and women between the ages of 30 and 74.
Everyone was given a score based on how “Paleolithic” their diet was.
Additionally, they underwent testing for a Mediterranean eating style, which permits a small amount of milk, yoghurt, cereals, and alcohol.
Then the dietary information was compared to their medical histories.
564 people got colorectal adenoma, which is a benign tumor that can lead to bowel cancer.
However, the chance of acquiring the tumor decreased by 29% in women who followed the most Paleolithic diet, and by 26% in those who consumed Mediterranean diets.
For men, these diets worked even better, cutting the chances of getting cancer by 51 and 42%, respectively.
A paleo diet aims to get people back to an eating pattern more in line with that of early humans.
The diet is based on the discordance hypothesis, which says the human body is genetically unsuited to the current food.
It is believed that age-related ailments and weight gain can be decreased by eating more in a manner akin to that of our prehistoric predecessors.
