Experts named foods that harm the skin most

Food choices and eating habits can all have a detrimental impact on your skin. Inflammation, poor gut health, and/or hormone imbalances are frequently linked to skin problems.

The specialists compiled a list of dietary behaviors that have a negative impact on skin health.

As noted by nutritionist Paulina Lee, skin problems are often linked to gut health and hormone imbalances.

According to the expert, the regular consumption of french fries, fried chicken, semi-finished products and white bread leads to inflammatory processes in the body and affects the skin.

“Consuming inflammatory foods can negatively impact your gut health and increase internal inflammation leading to skin breakouts. Our gut health is deeply connected to our skin. That’s why eating right to optimize your gut health may improve your complexion,” says Lee.

She advises avoiding foods high in refined carbs, such as white rice, pastries, sweets, and sweetened drinks.

Research suggests that foods that raise blood sugar levels and cause a greater insulin response can make acne worse. This rise in blood sugar can also stimulate the secretion of androgens, which when elevated may contribute to acne,” she adds.

Paulina recommends including probiotics and fiber-rich foods such as onions, garlic, leeks, asparagus, oats, and apples in your diet.  

Also, skin health is associated with the consumption of omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants, which can be found in salmon and berries. 

In addition to specific foods, stress and the lack of an eating schedule affect the condition of the skin. 

“Interestingly, some research does show that there is a significant correlation between acne and disordered eating, which means that disordered eating is a confounding variable that should be controlled for in acne-related research,” says nutritionist Rachel Fine, a registered dietitian.
