Experts report a new symptom of Long-Covid

Published on

New research found that nerve fibre loss and corneal changes may predict long Covid.

Using CCM, researchers discovered that minor losses of corneal nerve fibres and elevations in dendritic cells aid in the identification of long Covid.

CCM stands for cerebral cavernous malformation and is a collection of small blood vessels in the central nervous system and is commonly used to diagnose various diseases.

With the help of these blood vessels, the study of 40 patients found a strong connection between those who suffered long Covid and corneal nerve damage.

In more detail, neurological symptoms developed in 55 percent of patients at weeks four and twelve of a 22-week research, and in 43 percent of patients later in the study.

Angie Wen, MD, assistant professor of ophthalmology, cornea, cataract, and refractive surgery at Mount Sinai’s New York Eye & Ear Infirmary, stated: “COVID has affected so many parts of the body, it’s no surprise that it affects the eye.”

She further added that this study helps people who have inexplicable pain in the nerve system, such as the spinal cord, brain, hands, and feet, to have a better understanding.

Health workers describe long Covid as symptoms that have been persistent for more than 12 weeks after infection.

These symptoms can be severe or mild- but they cannot be explained by any other cause.

Currently, according to experts, these symptoms are indicators you are suffering from long Covid:

  • Extreme tiredness
  • Shortness of breath, heart palpitations, chest pain or tightness
  • Problems with memory and concentration (“brain fog”)
  • Changes to taste and smell
  • Joint pain.

Despite this, surveys have shown tens of thousands of additional concerns and adverse effects.

A study conducted by University College London (UCL) discovered a whopping 200 symptoms affecting 10 organ systems that are more likely to impact those suffering from chronic Covid than those who have fully recovered.

Strange symptoms include hallucinations, changes in vision and sight, bladder issues, and skin diseases.

And now, according to the findings of this latest study, changes to your cornea may be added to the list.

The cornea of the eye serves as a barrier against dirt, bacteria, and particles that could injure the sensitive components of the eye.

Indications that you have done some damage to this delicate area include redness, sensitivity to light or involuntary weeping.

Surgery is the only way to repair permanent corneal damage.

It is recommended that you get medical attention if you have corneal injury.

Unfortunately, there is still no solution for long-term Covid sufferers.

However, it is recommended that staying active and eating a well-balanced nutritious diet are the best ways to feel better.
