Experts reveal who should not drink coffee at all

While there are several compelling reasons to consume coffee—it may help with weight loss, reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, and improve your exercise performance, to name a few—excessive coffee can wreck havoc on your health.

“Everyone’s caffeine tolerance is different,” explains Annamaria Louloudis, MS, RDN, founder of Louloudi Nutrition, “so I would recommend monitoring your individual symptoms associated with coffee intake.”

According to experts, people with hypertension (a high blood pressure) and pregnant or breastfeeding women should think about cutting back on caffeine as it can be a landmine of sugar.

According to Sandy Younan Brikho, MDA, RDN, people with high blood pressure (also known as hypertension) should avoid consuming coffee as soon as possible because caffeine raises blood pressure.

One study showed an increase in age-related blood pressure among males who consumed more coffee, she highlights, noting that another study revealed that coffee consumption may or may not increase blood pressure depending on your genotype.

According to Louloudis, “Caffeine may trigger acid reflux symptoms because it works to relax the lower esophageal sphincter, causing reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus. Intake of coffee, tea, and soda (all caffeinated beverages) has been associated with an increased risk of gastroesophageal reflux symptoms.”

Furthermore, the expert warns that “due to its high caffeine content, coffee consumption six hours, or less, before bedtime has been associated with disruptive effects on sleep and increased insomnia.”

If you can’t entirely give up your coffee habit, she recommends having it earlier in the day and reducing your amount size.

“Drinking too much coffee can cause increased symptoms of anxiety including heart palpitations, trembling, headaches and insomnia,” one study shows says Louloudis, adding, “People who already live with anxiety disorders are particularly sensitive to these negative effects of caffeine.”

According to Ivanir, these symptoms include headaches, low energy, decreased alertness, sad mood, or even flu-like symptoms.

These symptoms can have a negative impact on your everyday quality of life, she says, making it difficult to concentrate at work or enjoy daily duties.

If you find yourself relying on a cup of coffee to get through the day, it may be an indication that you need to reduce the amount you consume, according to her.

Worst of all, some people drink coffee instead of meals as an unhealthy way to lose weight, which might disrupt your menstrual cycle.

“A sign you’re drinking too much coffee is menstrual irregularities, in particular not getting a monthly cycle,” adds Abby Vichill, MS, RDN, LD.

Some people who are trying to lose weight or eat in a calorie deficit use coffee to keep them from eating, suppress their appetite, or provide the artificial energy that they aren’t getting from a nutritionally adequate diet.

When you don’t eat breakfast and drink coffee, your cortisol levels are already high in the morning, so when you have low blood sugar and don’t eat breakfast and drink coffee, your cortisol levels are even higher.

“When the body senses such high levels of cortisol, the brain will signal to the body that it’s in a state of danger and will shut down reproduction in an effort to not put a growing fetus in a stressed environment,” she says.
