According to the nation’s top infectious diseases specialist, the United States is in an “unnecessary predicament ” of rising COVID-19 infections driven by unvaccinated Americans and the deadly delta variant.
“We’re going in the wrong direction,” said Dr Anthony Fauci, describing himself as “very frustrated.”
He said that advising vaccinated people to wear masks is “under active consideration” by the government’s top public health experts. Booster injections may also be recommended for individuals who have been vaccinated but have a weakened immune system, according to Fauci.

Fauci, who is also President Joe Biden’s top medical advisor, told CNN’s “State of the Union” that he had participated in discussions about changing the mask rules.
He added that some local governments, such as Los Angeles County, are already requiring people to wear masks in indoor public places, regardless of vaccination status. According to Fauci, the local regulations are consistent with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s advice that vaccinated people do not need to wear masks in public.
According to CDC statistics, over 163 million individuals, or 49 percent of the eligible U.S. population, have been vaccinated.
“This is an issue predominantly among the unvaccinated, which is the reason why we’re out there, practically pleading with the unvaccinated people to go out and get vaccinated,” Fauci said.
Fauci said that government specialists are examining preliminary data to determine whether to suggest booster injections for previously immunised people. He indicated that some of the most susceptible people, such as organ transplant and cancer patients, are “likely” to be advised to have booster injections.
He also thanked Republicans, like Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, as well as House Minority Leader Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana, for urging their people to be vaccinated. Their states have among of the country’s lowest immunisation rates.
“What I would really like to see is more and more of the leaders in those areas that are not vaccinating to get out and speak out and encourage people to get vaccinated,” Fauci said.
