Five Things You Can Do Right Now to Lower Your Blood Sugar Risk – CDC Explains

Increases in blood glucose are unavoidable, but when they become chronic, issues occur. A new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) highlights five “surprising triggers” for high blood sugar levels.

Diabetes is characterized by high blood sugar levels, but controlling them is critical. Failure to do so can have acute health consequences that worsen over time. Fortunately, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has identified many “surprising triggers” that might cause blood sugar levels to skyrocket.

Blood sugar regulation is mostly influenced by the foods we eat, but there are certain non-dietary elements to consider as well.

Environmental factors, in fact, can impede even the most rigorous efforts to modify nutrition.

Breakfast skipping, nasal spray, sunburns, gum disease, and artificial sweeteners are all potential risk factors for high blood sugar, according to the CDC.

“Look out for these surprising triggers that can send your blood sugar soaring,” the health organization warns.

Breakfast-skipping

“Going without [a] morning meal can increase blood sugar after both lunch and dinner,” according to the CDC.

Several studies, the most recent of which is just over three months old, have highlighted the dangers of skipping breakfast.

The study, which was published in the journal Diabetes Care, warned that skipping breakfast could worsen diabetics’ insulin function.

Breakfast fasting also elevated all-day blood sugar levels, according to Tel Aviv University researchers.

Nasal spray

Medicine Net says that most nasal sprays are made with a formula that includes glucagon powder.

Some scientists have advocated nasal spray as a treatment for hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, because this hormone can cause considerable rises in blood sugar levels.

Sunburn

Sunburns are next on the CDC’s list of unexpected triggers, as they can have a cascading effect on multiple biological pathways.

Sunburn can produce an increase in cortisol levels, the stress hormone, because it causes physical pain.

Under these conditions, cortisol will provide glucose to the body by releasing proteins held in the liver.

Gum problem

Inflammation in the gums can have a negative effect on blood sugar management in people with severe gum disease.

This inflammation can enter the bloodstream, causing the body’s defenses to malfunction, causing blood sugar control to be disrupted.

Sugar Substitute

Although many diabetics believe that artificial sweeteners are a safer alternative to sugar, experts have cast doubt on this idea.

“More research is needed,” the CDC says, “but some studies show they can raise blood sugar.”

“Watch out for other triggers that can make your blood sugar fall,” the body warns.

“For example, extreme heat can cause blood vessels to dilate (widen). That makes insulin absorb more quickly and could lead to low blood sugar.

“If an activity or food is new, check your blood sugar before and after to see how you respond.”
