Four Long COVID Symptoms Women More Likely to Suffer Than Men – Study Reveals

Published on

The number of people with long Covid is going up. When patients have COVID-19 symptoms over a lengthy period of time, they develop a chronic condition. One of the many issues facing the medical profession in the post-lockdown era is figuring out what it is.

According to figures provided earlier this month by the UKs ‘Office for National Statistics, approximately 1.7 million people had prolonged Covid. This translates to 2.7 percent of the population of the United Kingdom. As time passes and the number of cases continues to climb, this number will certainly rise. Scientists are discovering more about how long Covid has an effect on the body as they rise.

This includes how it impacts different genders.

In the Journal of Women’s Health, a study has found that there are some symptoms that women are more likely to have than men.

These include:
• Difficulty swallowing
• Fatigue
• Chest pain
• Heart palpitations.

Breathlessness was shown to be the most common symptom of extended Covid in a study conducted by the University of Parma in Italy.

They also discovered that women were more likely than males to suffer this sensation.

The symptom was reported by 97 percent of female patients and 84 percent of male patients.

It is unknown why women are more likely than males to encounter these symptoms.

According to the authors of the study: “Long-term longitudinal studies are needed to fully understand the sex-related pathophysiology of the symptoms and the effects of pharmacological treatment related to long Covid.

“These studies will be crucial to understanding the natural trajectory of long Covid in order to implement targeted treatment strategies and to prevent bias in treating males and females”.

“While women have a lower mortality rate than men during the acute phase of Covid, this study indicates that women have a greater likelihood of experiencing long Covid syndrome,” said Dr. Susan Kornstein, Executive Director of the Virgin Commonwealth University.

There are currently few treatments available for chronic Covid, an illness that affects people in waves and varies from day to day.

However, some people have discovered ways to treat it.

For Matthew Webb, an ambulance worker, taking a daily probiotic and food supplement has been “life changing”.

“In three days, the difference was off the charts. I felt I had so much energy, the brain fog had cleared”.

Mr. Webb has been able to return to work three days a week since beginning treatment.

Mr. Webb was one of the patients in a Cambridge hospital’s Addenbrooke’s experiment, in which they were given a phytochemical-rich concentrated meal capsule.

Professor Robert Thomas, the study’s leader, explained that they used concentrated natural chemicals found in everyday foods.

“We found participants had a two to three-fold improvement in the common symptoms, such as fatigue, cough, bowel problems, joint pain, which led to an overall improvement in wellbeing” said the Professor.
