How separation from Parents influences youth goals

The researchers from Moscow State Psychological and Pedagogical University (MGPPU or MSUPE) believe that this data will help authorities to design psychological assistance programs that teach young people to take responsibility for the realization of their plans and goals. The results are published in the journal Psychological-Educational Studies.

According to the experts, the current family is conservative from the point of view of transferring basic values and standards to the younger generation. When the time comes to let children make their own decisions, not all parents are willing to separate themselves psychologically so that they can live independently.

It is important that the process of psychological separation of young people from their parents ends on time. This will allow young people to maintain relationships with their parents to a new level, to realize their professional and personal abilities, to create their own family.

It has been concluded that psychological separation from parents in student age is important for developing goal setting in various areas of life.

The structural model of psychological separation includes several elements:

  • the emotional (the reduction of the independence of criticism by parents);
  • the conflictive (freedom from excessive feelings of guilt, concern, mistrust, responsibility);
  • the behavioral (the assessment of situations based on their own experience and not the experience of their parents);
  • the functional (the ability of an individual to live independently of their parents).

In the course of the research, scientists find out that young people achieve emotional separation from mother and father faster than young women. They also show greater emotional independence, make responsible decisions, show independence from their parents in everyday life. They set values and objectives such as ‘productive life’, ‘irreconcilability’, and ‘efficiency’. They are more satisfied with the realization of goals and the effectiveness of life.

Young girls depend psychologically on their fathers to a greater extent, they try to maintain emotionally close, supportive relationships with their mothers, they take their fathers’ opinions and advice into consideration when making important decisions. They aspire to realize traditional values and goals such as ‘love’, ‘happy family life’ and ‘neatness’.

According to the authors, the results of the research will help develop differentiated psychological assistance programmes for young people and young women, so that they can take responsibility for the independent approach of the objectives and their realization in various areas of their lives.

The team is planning to further study how psychological separation processes influence the development of the objective approach by students from families of different types: with a single spouse, with problems, inter-ethnic, with internal tensions and contradictions.
