Obesity: Study uncovers the main cause of excess weight in people

Often, those who are happy in a relationship stop working on themselves and consume more food, being in the company of their beloved.

Scientists have found that couples who live together are more prone to being overweight than single people.

The researchers analyzed data from a nationally representative, prospective study in the United States to examine whether romantic relationships were associated with obesity and obesity-related behaviors.

To begin, they examined the association between incident obesity and longitudinal changes in romantic relationships and duration of time living with a romantic partner, hypothesising that entry into (and duration of) a shared (vs. nonshared) household would be associated with a greater likelihood of incident obesity.

Second, they offer data on obesity and associated health behaviors in a linked subsample of romantic couples, hypothesizing greater concordance in obesity-related behaviours among married and cohabiting couples, as well as couples that have lived together for a longer period of time.

The findings showed that men who live with a partner are twice as likely to be obese as men who live alone. But in women, the likelihood of obesity being married is even higher.

Experts suggest that people gain weight for a variety of reasons. Primarily because they don’t need to attract others. Also because they often go to cafes and adopt their partner’s eating habits and lifestyle.

The researchers concluded that before living with a partner, people work on themselves to be attractive. Then they stop doing it. But those who are not overweight in a happy relationship have their own secret of a slim figure, which lies in the fact that they simply monitor their health.
