People Who Eat This Fruit Daily are Better Protected Against Sunburn – Claims New Study

Among all cancers, skin cancer has the highest incidence rate in the USA. Estimates show that one in five Americans will get skin cancer at some point in their lives. Every day, around 9,500 Americans are diagnosed with skin cancer, according to estimates.

Researchers say that more than 3 million Americans get nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) each year. This includes basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).

A new study shows that eating 60 grapes every day can help prevent sunburn.

After eating three-quarters of a punnet daily for two weeks, researchers discovered that participants’ skin was more protected against UV radiation damage.

It is believed that polyphenols contained naturally in fruits are responsible for the resistance.

“‘Let thy food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food’ dates back to the time of Hippocrates,” remarks lead author Professor John Pezzuto.

“Now, after 2,500 years, as exemplified by this human study conducted with dietary grapes, we are still learning the reality of this statement.”

In the US, skin cancer rates are rising more quickly than any other malignancy, doubling about every 10 to 20 years.

Approximately 90% of skin aging is attributed to the sun, and most incidences of skin cancer may be traced back to exposure to UV light.

Previous studies revealed that grapes protect the skin from UV damage.

For the latest trial, 29 participants were chosen, and they consumed two and a half cups of grape powder daily for two weeks.

After eating grapes, they discovered that almost a third of people had some resistance to UV radiation, and one in ten still maintained the advantages four weeks after stopping.

Before and after eating grapes for two weeks, the participants’ skin was tested to see how it reacted to ultraviolet light. This was done by figuring out how much UV light caused the skin to turn red after 24 hours.

The researchers also analyzed the gastrointestinal, blood, and urine samples of the subjects.

The same three metabolites, which are chemicals created by the body, were found in urine at lower concentrations in the group that had gained resistance to UV radiation.

2-Deoxyribose, in particular, indicates less UV damage.

The study’s results were published in the journal Antioxidants.
