As Covid infections are once again on the rise, it is more vital than ever to know which foods may help you recover from coronavirus and which may make you feel worse.

Covid cases are on the rise again in the US as two Omicron virus subtypes gain dominance, but hospitalizations remain low.

As a result, if you contract the coronavirus, you will probably treat it at home, and eating will be crucial to your recovery.

It’s crucial to eat healthfully after getting the coronavirus since protein, vitamins, and minerals provide your body the energy it needs to heal.

Protein-rich foods can restore muscles that have deteriorated due to illness, and foods high in energy can help maintain your immune system and boost your energy levels so you can return to your typical activities.

When feasible, the Covid experts advise minimizing weight loss and building up your muscle mass.

It’s crucial to keep an eye on your weight because it can determine how much food you should try to eat to speed up your recovery.

Even if you feel overwhelmed by the thought of a large meal, the best general advise is to eat substantial meals and snacks frequently.

Throughout your illness and recuperation, make sure to drink plenty of water and healthy beverages. If you can, consider milk-based beverages because the protein will add extra nutrients.

Meat, fish, eggs, cheese, beans, and lentils are all excellent sources of protein.

Food to consume after Covid

Some dishes that the experts suggest are:

  • Cottage cheese/beans with a small baked potato
  • Sandwich with meat, cheese or egg
  • Fish/chicken curry with rice
  • Scrambled/poached egg on toast/bagel
  • Prawn/chicken with noodles
  • Dhal with naan bread
  • Stew made with meat or a meat alternative (Quorn or tofu) and dumplings
  • Egg omelette with potatoes

Suggestions for snacks:

  • Greek yoghurt with a portion of nuts (30g)
  • Cheese, pâté or hummus on crackers
  • Custard/milky pudding and stewed fruit
  • You may wish to try using “enriched milk” which will provide you with extra protein. Add 4 tablespoons of skimmed milk powder to one pint of whole milk. Use this pint of enriched milk throughout the day in drinks, cereals and or sauces.
  • How to add protein and extra energy
  • Peanut butter, cashew nut butter, almond butter – add to soup, curry and sauces
  • Plain yoghurt (choose ones marked ‘high in protein’) – can be eaten with breakfast cereal and fruit or added to soup, curry and stews
  • Ground almonds – add to soup and sauces
  • Dried skimmed milk powder.
  • Gram (chickpea) flour
  • Grated cheese – add to mash potato, scrambled egg and soup.

Another choice is to take nutritional supplements orally, such as protein, which your doctor may recommend if you’re having trouble eating enough to stay healthy and maintain your weight.

Many supplements can be frozen for longer storage, and they come in a number of formats, including drinks, desserts, and soups.

As these additional vitamins may alter your appetite, you should take them between meals.

It’s important to routinely check in with your dietitian or the doctor who prescribed any supplements you’re taking because they can advise you on how long to take them.

According to experts, if you have a darker skin tone, are over 65, or are not in good enough health to routinely spend time outside, your body may not be able to produce enough vitamin D.
