A German study found that some juices can help the body fight coronaviruses like SARS-CoV-2 and the flu virus.
Researchers led by scientists from the University of Ulm Medical Center’s Institute of Molecular Virology discovered that Aronia melanocarpa juice, pomegranate juice (Punica granatum), and green tea (Camellia sinensis) all act against both viruses, implying that mouthwash containing these fluids can reduce viral load in the oral cavity and thus reduce virus transmission.

Scientists discovered that black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) juice can suppress the SARS-CoV-2 virus by up to 97 percent during the course of the study. The influenza virus was actively suppressed. Additionally, green tea and pomegranate juice have been shown to be effective.
The team found that Aronia melanocarpa juice was several times more effective than other foods at inactivating viruses.
“A five-minute mouth wash with Aronia melanocarpa juice produced stronger antiviral activities and inactivated influenza A virus (IAV), SARS-CoV-2 and also AdV5 at 99.99%, 96.98% and 93 23%, respectively,” the researchers note.
SARS-CoV-2 infection was also reduced by approximately 80% when pomegranate juice and green tea were used as a mouth wash for one minute.
Scientists highlighted that SARS-CoV-2 can be transmitted prior to the onset of symptoms, which makes it particularly dangerous. As a result, the authors of the study recommend using mouthwash and gargling with juices and tea to prevent the virus from spreading during the current COVID-19 pandemic.
According to experts, these and other natural juices, as well as green tea, can significantly weaken viruses through an acidic environment and plant polyphenols.

“For example, elderflower syrup (Sambucus nigra) has shown the ability to relieve symptoms in patients with the flu,” the experts said.
