The Green Vegetable that Can Make You Dehydrated During Hot Weather – Better To Avoid, Expert

Published on

During a heatwave, there are many rules for staying safe, such as drinking plenty of water and reapplying sunscreen.

As the temperature is expected to rise, experts also talk about what to avoid.

It’s possible that eating certain fruits and vegetables could increase your body’s ability to retain water while eating others could have the reverse effect.

Drinking water isn’t the only way to stay hydrated because what you eat also has an “important” impact.

Forbes Advisor and nutritionist Abi Roberts share foods and drinks to avoid during the hot weather.

The worst offender that you should “never” consume, according to Forbes Advisor, is asparagus, a naturally nutritious green vegetable.

According to the experts, “surprisingly, asparagus is one of the least hydrating foods.”

“This is because it is a natural diuretic which rids the body of excess fluid,” explains the expert, adding “meaning you need to wee more and you lose the fluid that you consume.

“Diuretics also help your body to get rid of salt, so are useful for the body, but should be consumed in moderation.”

This crunchy vegetable isn’t the only one, though, that could dehydrate you in the current heat wave.

The Forbes Advisor also issued a warning on foods like sugar, bread, cured meats, and salty snacks.

Salted treats

Salty snacks like pig scratchings, which specialists refer to as the “best-known dehydrating” meal, should also be avoided.

“Too much salt wreaks havoc on the kidneys,” adds Forbes Advisor, “so limiting salt intake is important for overall health.”

Bread

Bread is what many people eat for breakfast, and it could be adding more salt to your diet as a whole.

The experts add: “Bread, although not terribly high in salt per slice, is one of the most common reasons behind people having too much salt in their diet.

“Bread is often used at all mealtimes and even for snacks, so can add up to a high salt intake.

“Limiting the amount of bread you eat will help reduce the sneaky salt that you didn’t even know you were consuming.”

Salted meats

Cured meats contain a lot of salt, and if you eat too much of it, your kidneys may try to overcompensate by making you lose water.

Your body’s organs will draw water from other areas, depriving you of the necessary drink.

If you intend to indulge in antipasti this summer, Forbes Advisor suggests drinking lots of water.

Sugar

“When you consume sugar,” according to the experts, “the kidneys react similarly to when they encounter salt and pull water from other parts of the body, as the kidneys don’t want excess sugar in your bloodstream.”

In addition to foods, there are certain questionable beverages that might cause dehydration.

Others, like hot chocolate and smoothies, might come as a surprise, while others, like caffeine, alcohol, and energy beverages, might seem like a clear no.

Due to their high sugar content, smoothies and hot chocolate can both cause dehydration.

According to Forbes Advisor, when you blend a lot of fruit and vegetables, the sugars are released, which significantly reduces the amount of hydration.

The specialists advised avoiding mixed fruits for this reason. If you want hot chocolate, opt for low-sugar and water-based beverages.
