Sometimes it is quite difficult to distinguish between fruits and vegetables. Here we tell you what foods we consume as if they were vegetables, but according to their definition, they are fruits.

From a botanical point of view, a fruit is a structure that protects the seeds of a plant. According to experts, the fruit, the fruitlessness, the seed, or the fleshy parts of flower organs have reached an adequate degree of maturity and are suitable for human consumption, while the edible of vegetables is made up of their green organs (leaves, stems or inflorescences).

In this way, if you want to know if it is a fruit or a vegetable, you only have to look for where the seeds of the plant are found – if they are inside, it is a fruit – and if another part of the plant is edible. Yes, it is that simple!

It should be noted that we usually associate the idea of fruit with the sweetness of its pulp, but this is not always the case.

For example, the tomato – the fruit of the Solanum lycopersicum plant is not sweet, but neither is it salty, but rather umami: a flavor characterized by the presence in the fruit of substances such as glutamate, inosinate, and guanylate. Interestingly, in South Korea and Japan, tomatoes are used to decorate cakes, along with strawberries or cherries.

The avocado is also a fruit, it contains a seed, also known as a bone. It is often used in savory dishes, such as salads or the popular Mexican guacamole sauce. However, in some countries, such as Brazil, it is also quite common to use it in desserts.

The eggplant and peppers also have seeds, so botanically are nothing more and nothing less than fruits, although we call vegetables daily basis because of their slightly sweet taste. The same applies to cucumbers: these fruits belong to the Cucurbitaceae family along with pumpkins, melons, and watermelons.

Whether they are fruits or vegetables, it is essential to incorporate all these foods into your daily diet and they are rich in vitamins and minerals.
