This could be the reason behind your hair loss, says doctor

Hair loss is one of the most demoralizing things that can happen to men and women. Losing one’s hair can feel like an unavoidable reality for those of us who can’t afford (or stomach) an intrusive hair transplant.

However, one hair transplant doctor claims that there is a simple way to grow thick, healthy hair.

He’s not proposing anything extravagant, simply a higher carbohydrate intake, which will be welcome news to many foodies, as ‘carbs’ have long been blamed for weight gain.

A huge amount of energy is required to maintain up the cell turnover of hair follicles, explains Dr Michael May of the Wimpole Clinic. Carbohydrates provide this energy. A low-carb or “Keto” diet depletes the body of these critical energy sources, which might result in increased hair shedding.

He reminds out that, while eating too many processed carbs like cakes and white bread is unhealthy, hair growth requires a range of nutrients.

“By limiting your intake of carbohydrates (some vegetables and fruits are considered carbohydrates), you may be reducing the variety of nutrients like Vitamin D, C and biotin which are good for hair growth.”

A diet high in processed foods and refined carbohydrates with high quantities of simple sugars may stimulate the body to generate more androgens, which are male hormones, Dr. May adds.

He adds, “in the case of low carb diets, during the body’s transitional stage of adapting to a new diet, energy is needed for the important functions first (our heart, organs, lungs etc.) hence there’s less energy available for hair growth. The hair then goes into a resting phase, known as the telogen phase, which can lead to hair thinning.”

“The key message is that the foods we eat affect the growth and quality of our hair more than people think,” says Dr. May.

The good news is that in some circumstances, all it takes is a simple dietary change that includes a balance of proteins, lipids, vitamins, and minerals that are particularly vital for strong, healthy hair.

Dr. Michael May’s best foods to prevent thinning hair include 1 to 3 Brazil nuts daily, Eggs, salmon, mackerel, sardines, tuna, herring, meat, beans, lentils, spirulina, and sunshine vitamin.
