This Is What New Study Says About People Taking Statins And Risk Of Bleeding Stroke

Published on

As part of this research, the team examined both the lobe and non-lobe regions of the brain to see whether or not location was a role in statin use and the risk of a first intracerebral hemorrhage.

A new study published today in the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology, Neurology, found that people who take statins to lower cholesterol may be less likely to have a type of stroke called an intracerebral hemorrhage.

Brain bleeding causes intracerebral hemorrhage.

“While statins have been shown to reduce the risk of stroke from blood clots, there has been conflicting research on whether statin use increases or decreases the risk of a person having a first intracerebral hemorrhage,” adds study author David Gaist. “For our study, we looked at the lobe and non-lobe areas of the brain to see if location was a factor for statin use and the risk of a first intracerebral hemorrhage. We found that those who used a statin had a lower risk of this type of bleeding stroke in both areas of the brain. The risk was even lower with long-term statin use.”

The frontal, parietal, temporal, and occipital lobes, as well as most of the cerebrum, are all part of the lobe area of the brain. The brainstem, basal ganglia, thalamus, cerebellum, and cerebellum make up the majority of the non-lobe region.

In order to conduct the study, researchers combed through health data in Denmark and found 989 individuals with an intracerebral hemorrhage in the lobe region of the brain, with an average age of 76. They were put up against 39,500 controls of comparable age, sex, and other characteristics who had not had this particular form of stroke.

They also studied 1,175 patients with intracerebral hemorrhage outside the brain lobes, with a mean age of 75. They were compared to 46,755 individuals without this kind of stroke who were comparable in age, gender, and other variables.

Researchers gathered statin usage data from prescription records.

In comparison to 8.6% of participants overall, 6.8% of those who had a stroke had been taking statins for five years or more.

After correcting for characteristics such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and alcohol consumption, researchers discovered that current statin users had a 17% reduced chance of suffering a stroke in the lobe regions of the brain and a 16% lower risk of stroke in the non-lobe regions of the brain.

The risk of stroke in both hemispheres of the brain decreased with longer statin usage. More than five years of statin use was associated with a 33% reduction in the risk of lobe-related strokes and a 38% reduction in non-lobe-related strokes.

“It’s reassuring news for people taking statins that these medications seem to reduce the risk of bleeding stroke as well as the risk of stroke from blood clots,” Gaist adds. “However, our research was done in only the Danish population, which is primarily people of European ancestry. More research should be conducted in other populations.”
