More than 9% of the world’s population suffers from diabetes, which makes it a true epidemic of the 21st century. This natural remedy could be helpful for those looking to quickly and effectively lower blood glucose levels.

It is about fenugreek. This plant is known for its anti-cancer properties: several studies showed that it is capable of inhibiting the proliferation of malignant cells. 

But, did you know that it can also be of great help to those who suffer from diabetes?

A study, published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition, revealed that including fenugreek in the diet can reduce blood sugar levels by 25% and increase glucose tolerance. 

The authors of the experiment suggest that its effectiveness is due to the fact that this spice is rich in soluble fiber, a substance capable of delaying the absorption of sugar.

During the eight-week experiment, the participants were divided into two groups: the volunteers in the first group consumed 10 grams of fenugreek seeds a day mixed with the yogurt, while the rest drank them soaked in hot water.

The researchers concluded that patients in the second group showed a 25% reduction in blood glucose. As for the first group, it did not show “significant changes.”

“A diet rich in fenugreek significantly lowered fasting blood sugar and increased glucose tolerance, while LDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels were significantly lowered,” explain the study authors cited by the British journal Express.

However, despite how beneficial this spice can be for people with diabetes, it is necessary to consume it in moderation, as it is capable of causing hypoglycemia, or a lower than normal blood glucose level. You should also be careful if you suffer from gastrointestinal illnesses: in some cases, it can lead to nausea and diarrhea.
