US reports new wave of a dangerous syndrome in children following COVID-19 infections

Published on

With the spread of the new strain, the average daily incidence of multi-system inflammatory syndrome in children has doubled.

In the United States, there has been an increase in the number of cases of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, which occurs after catching the Delta coronavirus variant.

Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome (MIS-C) is a rare condition in which various parts of the body are affected, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, and skin. Also, the eyes or organs of the gastrointestinal tract become inflamed.

MIS-C most often appears four to six weeks after being infected with COVID-19. The rise in U.S. incidence follows a surge in the Delta coronavirus strain this summer.

Doctors note that the syndrome can cause serious conditions in children and be potentially fatal. True, according to the CDC, most children diagnosed with this diagnosis recover with medical attention.

A total of 46 confirmed deaths from MIS-C and 5,217 confirmed cases of MIS-C have been reported in the United States. Moreover, about 61% of reported cases of the disease occurred in children of Hispanic origin or blacks. It is also noted that children aged 6 to 11 are most often affected by the disease.

Coronavirus in the United States has been confirmed in 5.9 million children, with only 0.0009% MIS-C infection.

Dayton Children’s Hospital confirmed to ABC News that they, too, had witnessed an increase in recent weeks. Increases are being reported by officials across the country, not just in Ohio. Since early February, the number of MIS-C cases in Tennessee has more than tripled.

“We saw a dramatic increase in COVID-19 cases in children over the past two months with the delta variant surge in our region,” said Dr. Sophie Katz, assistant professor of pediatric infectious diseases at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt.

“Unfortunately, we anticipate an increase in MIS-C cases following this spike.”

At a press conference earlier this week, officials from Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, stated that their physicians had witnessed an increase in MIS-C in recent weeks as more children tested positive.

“I saw three with MIS-C personally last week,” said Dr. Angela Myers, the division director of infectious diseases at Children’s Mercy.

“I think we’ve had more [children] continue to get admitted to the hospital since then. That’s more than the zero we had multiple months before that.”

The CDC says that the best approach for a parent to safeguard their child is to take “daily activities” to avoid COVID-19, such as wearing a mask and washing their hands.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children’s Hospital Association, serious sickness caused by COVID-19 is still “uncommon” among children at this time.

Experts continue to underline the importance of not only getting children vaccinated when they are eligible but also getting their parents and everyone in their communities vaccinated as soon as possible.
