Young Females With This Disease More Likely To Enter Menopause Early

Diabetes puts people at a higher risk for a variety of health problems, including eye and foot difficulties, heart attacks and strokes, and kidney and nerve damage.

According to a new study, the earlier a woman develops diabetes, the earlier she will likely experience menopause.

The prevalence of type 1, type 2, and gestational diabetes has progressively increased during the last few decades.

Consequently, more women than ever before are anticipated to spend a greater proportion of their reproductive life with a diabetes diagnosis.

Several prior studies have analyzed the risk of getting diabetes after menopause, but this new study of over 11,000 women aimed to determine the long-term effects of premenopause diabetes on women’s reproductive health, including their age at natural menopause.

According to the findings, early diagnosis of type 1 diabetes (40 years) was associated with later age at natural menopause when compared to individuals who did not have diabetes.

There was no significant correlation between gestational diabetes and age at menopause.

“Our large retrospective cohort study shows that, even after adjusting for covariates associated with age at natural menopause, we still find an association between early diagnosis of diabetes and earlier menopause and a later diabetes diagnosis with a later age at menopause as compared to those who did not have diabetes,” says lead author Dr. Vrati Mehra.

“We hope our work lays the foundation for more research in this area so we can better understand and prevent the long-term impacts of diabetes on the human body and the reproductive system.”

This study adds to the mounting information of the overall damage that diabetes causes to the human body. In this case, it demonstrates that young women with a diabetes diagnosis are more vulnerable to accelerated ovarian aging and early menopause, according to Dr. Stephanie Faubion, director of NAMS.

The findings of the study will be presented at the North American Menopause Society (NAMS) Annual Meeting in Atlanta on October 12-15, 2022.
