Russia lifts Facebook, Instagram ban, just don’t break ‘extremism’ law

Russian courts have ruled that Meta cannot open offices or conduct business in Russia.

Citizens of Russia may use Meta’s products (the organization’s activity, as well as Facebook and Instagram, is prohibited on Russian Federation territory) if they do not engage in extremist activities, according to a decision by Moscow’s Tverskoy Court, which banned the organization’s activities in Russia.

“These measures of judicial protection do not limit the use of Meta’s software products by individuals and legal entities not participating in activities prohibited by law,” read the court ruling.

The court declared the operations of Instagram and Facebook, which are owned by Meta Platforms, to be extremist on March 21 and outlawed their operation in Russia.

Previously, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has insisted on Instagram and Facebook being banned.

According to the prosecutor, the prohibition does not extend to Meta’s WhatsApp messenger.

Meta is prohibited from opening offices or engaging in commercial activity in Russia, according to the court judgment.

Earlier, as the Kremlin is concerned about US President Joe Biden’s recent remark against his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday that they will closely monitor the US leader’s statements.

“This is a statement that certainly arouses concerns. We will keep a close eye on the US president’s statements, we will take note of them and will continue doing this in the future,” Peskov said.

In response to Biden’s remark during his speech in Warsaw, Peskov told Reuters on Saturday that “it’s not for Biden to decide” who would continue in power in Russia, emphasizing that “the president of Russia is elected by Russians.”

Additionally, the Russian Foreign Minister expressed optimism that the West will pressure Kyiv to take a more constructive stance.

In an interview with Serbian media on Monday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Russia has grounds to believe NATO has heard Moscow’s security concerns.

“When we recalled those promises [about not expanding NATO to the east], at first we were told that there were no such promises, when we presented the facts, we were told that it was a verbal promise, the task was to reassure us. And when things have calmed down, they decided to move on,” he said, “What kind of defensive alliance is this if it defines its own defense boundaries? We want NATO to return to sanity. And we have every reason to believe that our most serious concerns, which are directly related to our fundamental legitimate interests, are being heard and understood.”

“I still see that there is a chance for an agreement [between Russia and Ukraine], because there is an understanding of our Western partners’ gross mistakes of many years, it is present, although for understandable reasons they will hardly say it out loud,” the minister added.
