Former US President Donald Trump’s unblocked Twitter account is fast gaining followers, with 1.3 million new followers appearing in just 40 minutes.

Trump’s account was suspended by Twitter last year after the events at the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, but it was reinstated on Saturday. Elon Musk, a billionaire entrepreneur, said on Twitter after the conclusion of his poll on whether to reinstate Donald Trump that: “The people have spoken. Trump will be reinstated. Vox Populi, Vox Dei .”

Even though Trump hasn’t tweeted anything new yet, more than 1.9 million people already follow the @realDonaldTrump Twitter account with the blue verification badge. Just over 320,000 people were following the account before it was reinstated. On January 8, 2021, when the account was suspended, it had approximately 90 million followers.

This weekend, over 15 million Twitter users took part in Musk’s 24-hour poll about whether or not to bring back Trump’s page. 51.8% voted in favor of bringing back Trump’s page, while 48.2% voted against it.

Saturday, Trump responded to Musk’s poll on social media by saying that he was going to stick with his own Truth Social platform.

“Vote now with positivity, but don’t worry, we aren’t going anywhere. Truth Social is special!” Trump posted.

Following the incident at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, Trump was banned from both Twitter and Facebook. His activities in regard to the event were found to be in violation of the platforms’ policies. Later, the former president started a new social network called Truth Social to combat Big Tech censorship and safeguard free speech and expression.
