US Mother Files lawsuit against Meta for ‘psychological hacks’

Published on

A Castle Rock mother has filed a lawsuit against Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram.

Her lawyer informed FOX31 that the teenager’s 14-year-old daughter’s health has suffered as a result of her use of social media.

The mom, identified in the lawsuit as Malinda Harris, asserts that her daughter has exhibited suicidal tendencies and other forms of self-harm, and that Facebook has been aware of the underlying business activities for years.

“They have, for quite some time now, prioritized profit over user safety,” Harris’ attorney, Clinton Richardson, said.

Harris argues in the lawsuit that her daughter was harmed by the company’s business practices.

Richardson remarked, “They are well aware of a variety of psychological hacks that the general public is not aware of. Things that will make it very enticing, unknowingly enticing, for individuals to want to use these platforms.”

Harris says her daughter’s exposure to these methods has caused her a variety of physical and mental health problems.

“Multiple suicide attempts,” Richardson added, “we believe are all fairly attributable to prolonged exposure.”

Richardson of the Alabama law firm Beasley Allen stated that the adolescent had injured herself.

“She’s been diagnosed with at least one eating disorder, as well as depression and anxiety,” Richardson said of the woman who burned herself and cut herself.

The Problem Solvers asked Harris’ lawyer if there was anything the teen’s parents could have done to prevent the harm she allegedly caused herself.

Richardson explained, “It’s not as simple as looking at the parents and saying you should have done more to intervene.”

Last year, leaked internal documents from the firm proved they were aware of the impact content on their platforms had on adolescent females, going so far as to suggest that Instagram made them feel worse about their bodies.

According to Richardson, Harris is looking into compensation options as part of the lawsuit, but he is more concerned with accountability than anything else.

Revyuh contacted Meta and Facebook for comment on the situation. At the time of publication, they had not responded to our queries.
