While reporting live from a war in Ukraine, a CHECHEN unit commander was killed on camera.
Chechens are currently fighting the Russian army in the Donbas region as Vladimir Putin strives to retake control. Chechnya’s harsh ruler, Ramzan Kadyrov, is a loyal supporter of Russian President Vladimir Putin and has completely supported the conflict against his western neighbor. According to Russian official media, 12,000 Chechen volunteers have been enlisted to fight for Moscow.
The Chechen commander brags in the TikTok video about how his troops successfully completed their military mission against Ukrainian forces.
He gives his team a “five-plus” rating and claims that only one of their members was harmed.
A shell can be seen and heard exploding adjacent to the commander at that very moment, bringing the live broadcast to a sudden halt.
His mobile phone signal, according to social media users, may have made him an easy target for a targeted missile attack.
One wrote: “That thing was basically giving anyone watching with the right equipment a 10-digit grid to his location.
“He basically called that round in on himself.”
Chechens have a reputation for ferocity and have been accused of war crimes on numerous occasions.
The conflict in Ukraine has provided Kadyrov with an ideal opportunity to demonstrate both his devotion and continued utility to Putin.
The Kremlin, which funds the Chechen leader’s government, is responsible for his position and power.
Kadyrov receives large subsidies from Russia’s federal budget in exchange for preserving Chechnya’s stability.
However, since bloodshed and insecurity in the region have decreased in recent years, some in Putin’s government have questioned whether Moscow should continue to provide the Chechen strongman so much money.
Over the years, Kadyrov has proven to be a helpful instrument for the Kremlin in suppressing internal political dissent in Russia.
Chechen soldiers are accused of being engaged in the death of Boris Nemstov, a key opposition politician.
Ruslan Geremeyev, his commander in Mariupol, is suspected of orchestrating the cold-blooded assassination of the opposition leader directly outside the Kremlin walls in 2015.
In late March, Geremeyev was injured while fighting Ukrainian soldiers in Mariupol.
Kadyrov’s militias, according to experts, are a vital aspect of Moscow’s “psychological war” on Ukraine.
“The announcement of the entry into the war of Kadyrov’s troops and the propaganda that surrounds it are part of this effort to destabilise the enemy,” Aurelie Campana, an expert on political violence and Russia, wrote on the Conversation website.
“They are known for their cruelty. Involving Chechen troops serves to fuel fear within the Ukrainian population.”
