On the eve of the free trade agreement between Mexico, the United States and Canada, economic specialists believe that the relationship between Trump and López Obrador points towards the integration of North America.

The relationship between the presidents of the United States, Donald Trump, and Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, could lead to a political-commercial integration based on the Treaty of Mexico, United States and Mexico (T-MEC) soon to enter into force.

During the virtual forum, The T-MEC and its perspectives, the economist Luis de la Calle affirmed that the support between both presidents is one of the most important aspects within the process of integration of the treaty.

“When the history of North American economic integration is written, in 150 years, President Trump and President Lopez Obrador will be known as founding fathers of North American integration,” he said.

On the other hand, De la Calle pointed out that the potential of the Mexican economy could lead the country to become “North America’s export platform for the world.”

He also recalled that Mexico is one of the main suppliers of what is consumed in the United States, but above all of the agricultural products that could be produced and processed nationwide.

“We have the potential to become North American cuisine; that is, not just the production of primary products, but their processing. And, once we can conquer the North American market, we can expand that potential to other countries in the world, but particularly China,” he added.

It should be noted that this occurs in the framework of the announcement of Lopez Obrador’s visit to the United States to meet with his counterpart, Donald Trump, to celebrate the entry into force of the T-MEC.

“It will be soon, we are just waiting to define the character of the meeting. We want the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, to also participate,” the Mexican president said during the morning conference on June 24.
