A 7-year-old girl is in critical condition after being shot in the abdomen while at the home of relatives celebrating Christmas, as reported by the Chicago Police in the United States.

Just before the gunshots exploded, the girl was playing with her two younger cousins on a sofa in the living room while her uncles sat around the dining room table, relatives of the little girl said to the American newspaper ‘Chicago Tribune’.

The man who was shot during the shootout was transferred to a different hospital and according to police his condition has stabilized and will soon be transferred to another medical centre. So far no one has been arrested for the shooting.

The mayor of Chicago, Lori Lightfoot, has shown her solidarity with the family of the girl and has asked the neighbours for their collaboration in case they can provide information to the Police that serves to find those responsible for the shooting.

Lightfoot has stressed through Twitter that as such parties approach, city authorities renew their “commitment to protect” the little ones, and wanted to reassure parents by ensuring that the police “will do everything they can to bringing the person responsible to justice.”

“As a city, it has our love and support,” said the mayor through her official Twitter social network account.
