The results of an Associated Press study of government data available from May reveals that ‘breakthrough’ infections among fully vaccinated individuals accounted for less than 1,200 of 853,000 COVID-19-related hospitalizations. Almost about 0.1%

And nearly 150 of the more than 18,000 COVID-19-related deaths in May occurred among those who were fully vaccinated. This accounts for about 0.8% of deaths, or five per day on average.

The agency examined data provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC itself did not estimate the percentage of hospitalizations and fatalities in fully vaccinated individuals, citing limitations in the data.

Of these: Only 45 states report breakthrough infections, and some are more aggressive than others in finding such cases. So the data probably underestimates those infections, according to CDC officials.

However, the overall trend in the data echoes what many health authorities are seeing across the country and what high-level experts are saying.

Over 600,000 people in the United States are dead from COVID-19, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
