President Joe Biden said that human rights violations will have consequences for China.

The president stressed that the US will continue to strengthen its role as a human rights defender at the UN and other international organizations that have influence over China.

“China is striving to become the world leader. And to achieve that nickname […] it has to gain the trust of other countries. As long as they are involved in activities contrary to basic human rights, it will be difficult for them to achieve it,” Biden stated.

“There will be repercussions for China and [Xi Jinping] knows it,” Biden said during a meeting with voters at the Milwaukee, Wisconsin city hall, organized and broadcast on CNN.

On January 10, Biden and Xi had a long telephone conversation, the first since the inauguration of the 46th US president. According to the White House, Biden expressed concern about “Beijing’s coercive and unjust economic practices, repression in Hong Kong, human rights abuses in Xinjiang, and increasingly assertive actions in the region, particularly with regard to Taiwan.”

For his part, Xi stressed that the issues of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Xinjiang are China’s internal affairs and urged the US to treat them wisely, respecting the fundamental interests of his country. The Chinese leader pointed out that cooperation between Beijing and Washington would be beneficial for both parties and the entire world, while the confrontation would surely be a catastrophe.

White supremacism

On the other hand, Biden said that supporters of white supremacy represent the greatest terrorist threat within the United States today.

It is complex, wide-ranging and real, he said.

The president promised that the Department of Justice and the Division of Civil Rights will target those people.

The current administration, according to the president, will evaluate in particular the scope of this phenomenon in specific groups, such as the military and former police officers.

Biden called the adherents of white supremacism “insane” and “dangerous.
