Covid-19: The U.S. surpassed 8 million cases

Less than three weeks to the presidential elections (voting on November 3), the United States this Friday exceeded 8 million Covid-19 contagions, with 8,008,402, and already has 218,097 deaths.

According to Johns Hopkins University, the U.S. is the most infected country in the world, followed by India, with 7,370,468; Brazil, with 5,169,386; Russia, with 1,361,317; Argentina, with 949,063; Colombia, with 936,982.

The nation governed by Donald Trump is also the one with the highest number of deaths ahead of Brazil, with 152,460; India, with 112,161; Mexico, with 85,285; the United Kingdom, with 43,519; Italy, with 36,427; Spain, with 33,777; and Peru, with 33,577.

Within the US, the state with the highest number of cases detected is California, with 868,755, followed by Texas with 837,691, Florida with 748,437 and New York, with 479,400.

By mortality rate, New York is the one with the highest death toll, with 33,337, although it is no longer the state with the highest number of infections.

After New York are Texas (17,288), California (16,847), New Jersey (16,202) and Florida (15,830).

The provisional death toll -218,097 – far exceeds the lower limit of the initial estimates of the White House, which projected at best between 100,000 and 240,000 pandemic deaths.

Trump lowered those estimates and was confident that the final figure would be between 50,000 and 60,000 deaths, although later he predicted up to 110,000 deaths, a number that has also been exceeded.

For its part, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluations (IHME) of the University of Washington, whose models for predicting the evolution of the pandemic are often set by the White House, estimates that by the elections it will reach 230,000 deaths and by December 31 to 320,000.
