Rudy Giuliani, who led Donald Trump’s court efforts to overthrow the results of the 2020 presidential election, has withdrawn from an interview scheduled for Friday, according to a spokesperson for the congressional committee probing the insurgency at the United States Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
Tim Mulvey, the committee’s spokesperson, sent the following statement Thursday night to numerous media outlets: “Mr. Giuliani had agreed to participate in a transcribed interview with the Select Committee. Today, he informed committee investigators that he wouldn’t show up unless he was permitted to record the interview, which was never an agreed-upon condition.”
Mulvey added: “Mr. Giuliani is an important witness to the conspiracy to overthrow the government and he remains under subpoena. If he refuses to comply the committee will consider all enforcement options.”
Despite the cancellation of Friday’s meeting, Giuliani’s lawyer, Robert Costello, told CNN that conversations between the two parties are still ongoing.
The committee sent subpoenas to Giuliani and other members of Trump’s legal team in January after they filed phony legal challenges to the 2020 election, fueling the lie that the previous president’s race had been stolen.
Giuliani also addressed at a rally in front of the White House prior to the insurgency on Jan. 6. He, like Trump, stated that the election of Biden was an existential crisis for the country and used words that hinted at violence.
“Let’s have trial by combat,” Giuliani said. “I’m willing to stake my reputation, the President is willing to stake his reputation, on the fact that we’re going to find criminality there.”
