The people of Assam and the rest of the Northeast are opposing the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), saying that there will be a flood of Bangladeshi refugees after that.

The citizenship amendment bill continues to boil in the Northeast. Curfew has been imposed in Assam’s Guwahati following violence and protests. Mobile Internet services have been closed for 24 hours in 10 districts of the state. Thousands of people took to the streets on Wednesday against the Citizenship Amendment Bill in Assam. In many places, there were clashes with their security forces. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal remained stranded for hours due to the rampant protests outside Guwahati Airport.

On the other hand, there is a lot of opposition to the Citizenship Amendment Bill in Tripura as well. Army has been sent there to deal with the situation. Congress has called for a bandh in the state today.

Meanwhile, the central government has issued an advisory for private TV channels. It said that the channels should not show content that can provoke violence or which threatens to deteriorate the law and order situation or which promotes anti-national attitudes.

After the Lok Sabha, the Citizenship Amendment Bill was also passed in the Rajya Sabha yesterday. The Rajya Sabha had 125 votes in favour and 105 votes against it. During this time there was a lot of uproar in the house. While presenting the bill, Home Minister Amit Shah said that the Muslims of the country do not have to be worried about it, because they were, and will remain Indian citizens. Earlier, in a meeting of the BJP Parliamentary Party, Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed the bill as historic. He said that those opposing it are speaking the language of Pakistan. On the other hand, Congress called it an attack on the soul of India.
