An armed man in the US wounded three people, including a police officer, during a shooting in Tampa, Florida, before police arrested him, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
“Antonio Cruz Ortiz, 31, is the suspect in multiple random shootings Thursday night, including 4 in Hillsborough County,” the statement said.
During the shooting, which lasted 40 minutes in various parts of the city, Ortiz opened fire on at least 11 people and injured a policeman and two other adults, the county sheriff’s office and the city police department said.
Two adult victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries after Ortiz opened fire on his vehicle, the county sheriff’s office said.
Later, two police officers tried to arrest Ortiz, but were attacked after having him stop his vehicle on the side of the road.
One officer “suffered a non-fatal injury to the arm from gunshot and broken glass,” while the other crouched down as bullets approached him, the Tampa Police Department said.
Ortiz was arrested and taken into custody after being found in a nearby apartment.
He was charged with seven counts of aggravated assault with a firearm, four counts of attempted second-degree murder and gunfire at a vehicle, the sheriff’s office said.
