Jill Biden hits back at a Wall Street Journal writer who mocked her ‘Dr’ degree, saying that her doctor title sounds and feels fraudulent in a recently published article
In a tweet on Sunday night, future first lady Jill Biden hit back at the ‘misogynist’ Wall street journal writer who mocked her for using her ‘Dr’ title.
In his piece ‘Is There a Doctor in the White House? Not if You Need an M.D’, published on Friday, Joseph Epstein called Dr.Biden ‘Kiddo’. He wrote ‘A wise man once said that no one should call himself ‘Dr.’ unless he has delivered a child’.’ Think about it, Dr. Jill, and forthwith drop the doc.’
Hitting back on the comments of Epstein, Dr. Biden tweeted:’Together, we will build a world where the accomplishments of our daughters will be celebrated, rather than diminished.’
Northwestern University in Chicago where Epstein previously taught distanced itself from his ‘misogynistic’ writing. They issued a statement saving ‘Northwestern is firmly committed to equity, diversity and inclusion, and strongly disagrees with Mr Epstein’s misogynistic views.’
‘While we firmly support academic freedom and freedom of expression, we do not agree with Mr. Epstein’s opinion and believe the designation of doctor is well deserved by anyone who has earned a Ph.D., an Ed.D. or an M.D.,’ statement further read. Epstein’s profile was also removed from the website of the university and they clarified that he has not taught there since 2003.
Dr. Biden holds a doctorate in education from the University of Delaware. During the vice presidency of her husband Joe Biden, she continued to be a full-time English professor at Northern Virginia Community College. She was the first, second-lady of the U.S to do so.
Epstein’s word spurred fierce reactions from the singer Pink, Vice President-elect Kamala Haris’ Husband Doug Emhoff, and actress Debra Messing.
Joe Biden’s communications director, Elizabeth Alexander in her tweet rebuked the wall street journal and called the piece ‘sexist’ and ‘shameful’.
Dr Martin Luther King’s Daughter Bernice Tweeted:’Dear @DrBiden: My father was a non-medical doctor. And his work benefited humanity greatly. Yours does, too.’
Former presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg’s husband Chasten in his tweet said: The author could’ve used fewer words to just say “ya know in my day we didn’t have to respect women.”
Jill Biden is married to President-Elect Joe Biden for 43 years. She earned four degrees, including a double master’s and a doctorate of education from the University of Deleware while raising her family.
Before she moved to Washington DC, she taught at a community college in Delaware.
