New York suspends Rudy Giuliani as lawyer for lying about elections

An appeals court ordered the temporary suspension of Giuliani’s license, after a disciplinary board concluded that he lied about alleged election fraud.

An appeals court on Thursday ordered the temporary suspension in New York of the lawyer license of former mayor Rudy Giuliani and former lawyer of former US President Donald Trump, after a disciplinary board concluded that he lied about the alleged fraud in the 2020 presidential elections.

According to the appellate court, Giuliani’s conduct threatened “the public interest and justifies the provisional suspension of the practice of law,” reports The New York Times.

The court document notes that there is evidence that Giuliani made “false and misleading statements to courts, legislators and the general public in his capacity as attorney for former President Donald Trump and the Trump campaign in relation to Trump’s failed effort to promote reelection in 2020″.

Months before the presidential elections of November last year, in which the Democratic candidate Joe Biden prevailed, Trump launched a disinformation campaign to raise doubts about the transparency of the process and, later, he redoubled those efforts to the extent of describing the elections as fraudulent and to ensure that Biden had stolen the presidency.

However, beyond their publicity campaign, which continues today, Trump and his team were unable to gather any evidence to support their claims, and no court agreed to take their allegations to trial, for lack of evidence.

Giuliani, 77, began practicing law in 1969, worked in the Justice Department during the Ronald Reagan Administration and, in 1983, was appointed District Attorney for the Manhattan District in New York.

He was also mayor of New York between 1994 and 2002 and gained national and international notoriety in 2001, after the terrorist attacks against the Twin Towers of September 11.

Giuliani has been under investigation since at least 2019 in a case that allegedly focused on his business in Ukraine. Although he has not been charged so far, the Prosecutor’s Office tries to show that Giulani illegally pressured the Government in favor of Ukrainian officials and businessmen, who allegedly helped the lawyer look for dirty laundry on Trump’s political rivals, including the then aspiring to the presidency Joe Biden.

Recently, the legal battle has focused on documents and data from digital devices seized by the FBI, which last April searched Giuliani’s home, which has so far denied all these alleged irregularities.
