Trump charges against the ‘impeachment’: “It’s a declaration of war on democracy”

Published on

This Wednesday, the lower house is expected to vote on political charges against Trump, which will probably come forward thanks to the comfortable majority that Democrats have

The US president, Donald Trump, said Tuesday that the political trial against him is “a declaration of war on democracy” of the country and demanded the “immediate cessation” of what he described as a “fantasy” in a tough letter to the president of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi. “By proceeding with your invalid impeachment, you are violating your oaths of office, you are breaking your allegiance to the Constitution, and you are declaring open war on American Democracy,” Trump said in the letter to Pelosi, a day before the House of Representatives put to vote the charges of “obstruction to Congress” and “abuse of power” against him.

The letter, of six pages and unusual roughness, charges frontally against the Democratic opposition. “You are the ones who interfere with the US elections. You are the ones who subvert democracy. You are the ones who obstruct Justice. You are the ones who are bringing pain and suffering to our Republic for your selfish personal, political and partisan benefit,” he added. Therefore, he demanded Pelosi and the Democrats the “immediate cessation” of the process of political destitution, which he called “fantasy.”

This Wednesday, the House of Representatives is expected to put the political charges against Trump to the vote in plenary, which will probably come forward thanks to the comfortable majority that the Democrats have, which would give the green light to a process of impeachment against the President in the Senate that would begin in January. Given Republican control in the Upper House, 53 versus 47, and that the political trial also requires a two-thirds majority, Trump’s impeachment seems highly unlikely.

In September, the Democrats announced the start of a political trial investigation against Trump, after an informant revealed to the Intelligence services the content of a telephone conversation in July between the president and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodimir Zelenski. In it, the American pressured the Ukrainian to open investigations against his political rival and former vice president, Democrat Joe Biden, and his son Hunter for alleged corruption in that country.

In recent months, six committees of the lower house have conducted an investigation to open a possible political trial to the president, which has included witness hearings, both behind closed doors and in public. This Monday, the Lower House Judiciary Committee published the details of the case in a 658-page document, which concludes that Trump “has betrayed the nation” in search of his personal interest.

In the text, it is established that Trump is politically accused of ” serious crimes and offences,” according to the US Constitution, having abused his power and obstructed the work of Congress.
