The new rule applies to private and public schools in all provinces of the country.

The Afghan Ministry of Education has banned schoolgirls over 12 from singing at public events.

According to the department’s decree, such performances are now prohibited in all public and private schools in all provinces of the country. School principals are responsible for enforcing the ban. An exception is made only for cases where schoolgirls can sing in front of an audience of only women.

The government’s decision was posted by Kabul-based TV company Ariana News on Twitter.

A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Education confirmed the authenticity of the letter, adding that the decision applies to all provinces in the country. In a video message distributed by the media, Najib’s spokeswoman Arian said the decision was made following suggestions from students and parents.

It is clarified that now men will not be able to teach singing lessons for schoolgirls over 12 years old.

In turn, journalist Ruchi Kumar believes that in this way the country’s authorities imitate the values of the radical Taliban movement, which the UN Security Council previously recognized as a terrorist organization.

In turn, the independent commission on human rights in Afghanistan says that education should be equally accessible to all children, regardless of age or gender.
